“The green season is perfect because the gorillas are near the lodges because of abundance of food and the permits are subsidized.” - Kagera Safaris

The home to half of world's remaining mountain gorillas

Views: 624 Visited: Oct 2014 Reviewed: Feb 09, 2015

This massive forest cover is home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. It is also a UNESCO world heritage center. It offers an experience that makes you ‘one with nature’ – because you are fully immersed with nothing but wilderness around you. The air you breathe is all pure – thanks to the millions of trees surrounding you. The park has the main attraction as Gorillas but is home to numerous mammals, rare bird species (including Albertine Rift endemics), reptiles, butterflies, insects and primates. The different vegetation ranges provide a home to the different inhabitants with over 400 species of trees. Some of the rare birds includes African Green broadbill, Handsome Francolin, Black billed Turaco, Purple-breasted, Blue-headed and Regal Sunbirds etc. The Primates here include; Chimpanzees - which are more difficult to spot, L’hoest monkeys, Blue monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys, Black-and-white Colobus monkeys and Baboons. Mammals include; Elephants, Golden Cats, Duikers. While here you have an opportunity to view the great landscapes of Kigezi region and visit the communities which have co-existed with these animals for years. Join a project or simply listen to the stories as told by the locals – shop for crafts.

Choose to stay in a lodge that is located inside or adjacent to the park for an experience beyond the ordinary.

Activities to engage in; Gorilla tracking, Bird watching, Nature walks, Mountain Hiking, Mountain biking, Community walks and Cultural experiences.
