“Slow down, relax, take it easy...settling into the local's rhythm of life is essential” - Stephen Bailey

Sustainable tourism, beautiful landscapes...but where are the animals?

Just getting to the Okavango is a memorable adventure. The roads cut through barren bushland and it's rare to spot another vehicle. During the peak flood times of June – August the Okavango water level turns surrounding roads into mush, and twice our truck had to be pulled out of a river by tractor. Most tours leave from Botswana's main tourist town, Maun, but I went from the small village of Sepupa on the Okavango's western edge.

Sailing in a traditional mokoro canoe we set off into the Delta. There was a stunning tranquility to the trip, the silence only broken by birdsong or the soothing whistling of our driver. Canoe trips are becoming a sustainable source of income for local fisherman, and my safari was combined with a visit to a riverside village which seemed lost in time. This is isolated rural Africa and the fisherman's enthusiasm was immensely satisfying.

But where were the animals? We found a couple of hippos beside the shore and a lot of sunbathing crocodiles, but the big wildlife was sadly missing. Still, the Okavango is a unique phenomenon and exploring the landscape and people does make up for worth it. However, after seeing the photos of travellers who went on helicopter trips I was insanely jealous that I only saw its beauty from ground level. It's a very different experience to other safaris or national parks, and if you lower your animal sighting ambitions you will be very satisfied.
