Mana Pools National Park is in the far north of Zimbabwe. It includes the south bank and islands of the Zambezi River, which forms the border with Zambia. The park is known for wildlife visibility beside the river and in the flood plains. Large populations of elephants, hippos and Nile crocodiles gather at sunrise in the Long Pool. In the park’s south, lions wait for prey around the waterhole at Chitake Spring. Mana Pools is a RAMSAR site, Important Birding Area (IBA) as well as being a World Heritage Site. Mana Pools is listed as one of the Top 3 Wildlife destinations in Africa! There is nowhere else in Africa you will experience abundance, diversity and scenery as in Mana Pools.

Day 1 – Lusaka

On arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka you will be met and driven to your guest house for the evening. Dinner is included. Pierre will meet you at the airport and ensure you are comfortable. The follow days plan will be explained to you. Any last-minute shopping you need to do can be arranged. (D)

Day 2 – Lower Zambezi National Park

The team will collect you from Zebra Guest House, we will have packed the vehicles with food and fuel. A half days drive from Lusaka lies our campsite for the night. Nestled in the trees on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. We will spend the afternoon relaxing on the water’s edge game viewing from the comfort of a deck chair. From this campsite we are looking South into Mana Pools and Zimbabwe on the other side of the Zambezi River. (BLD)

Day 3 – Zambia into Zimbabwe : Chitake Springs

With an early start we will depart our campsite and drive for 3 hours to the small town of Chirundu where we will fuel up & purchase groceries. Crossing the Zambezi River into Zimbabwe there is a half days drive to our next campsite at Chitake Springs. There is a fair bit of formality involved with entering the park and once in the park we will drive down to the first, and probably most exciting, campsite of this tour. Its possible there will be delays so we may only arrive in the late afternoon – this is Africa! Sit back and relax. Once we arrive at our campsite for the night we

will have dinner & ensure we are within the confines of the camp when the light finally fades into a stygian blackness. (BLD)

Day 4, 5, and 6 – Chitake Springs #3

Our first night in Mana Pools will have been quite an eye opener! Lions spend a lot of their time waiting in ambush at the various water holes around the dry river bed, at night their roaring echo’s in the river bed giving the area a sinister feel to it. Hyena whoop at night and if you listen carefully you can hear herds of elephant as they quietly walk down the river bed. Porcupine raid the campsites for the scraps we drop, baboons call out in distress – perhaps there is a leopard hunting them in the trees’.

During the day there is always activity, the animals appear and dissolve into the bush at regular intervals. During the hottest hours of the day, string a hammock between some trees with a book, keep your binoculars handy and enjoy the serenity of the experience.

Massive herds of Buffalo are not uncommon churning the sand into a fine mist of dust as they drink and wallow in the mud. (BLD)

Day 7, 8, 9 and 10 – Nyamepi #20

After a relaxed breakfast on the banks of the river we will pack all out kit, break camp and head North for our next campsite for the following four days. We will be camping on the banks of the Zambezi River looking into Zambia. This campsite and area is very well known for spectacular sceneries and an abundance of wildlife. Once again, the campsites are not fenced so vigilance is necessary at all times – the animals rule here, it’s their domain. Game drives will also be done extensively to explore more of the park on all the days we are in the park. Our Camp Manager will stay at the campsite for security (baboons!). Early mornings are always good for the lighting and photography, so some early mornings are on the agenda. (BLD)

Day 11, 12, 13 and 14 - Ndungu

Today we will move to a new campsite and a new perspective. Situated a fair distance to the West this is the furthest campsite in Mana Pools and once again we will have exclusive use of the area for the 3 days that we will camp here. (BLD)

Day 15 Mana Pools to Lusaka

After a leisurely start to the day we will break camp and exit the park. We will cross the border back into Zambia at the same point & continue on to Lusaka city. We will arrive in Lusaka midafternoon and check into the same guest house as on your first night in Lusaka. (BLD)
